Adler's work is fundamental to the professions and practices of school psychology, school counseling, the community mental health movement and parent education. His teachings and ideas are still practiced and taught a various Institutes set up in his honour. Adler was one of the earliest theorists to utilize a short-term, active, focused and solution-oriented approach to psychotherapy. While his death was a blow to the school of thought he had pioneered, many of his ideas were taken up by “neo-Freudians”. However, after growing disagreements he left with several other theorists in 1911, starting his own group originally named the Society for Free Psychoanalytic. Alfred Adler was an early associate of Sigmund Freud in Vienna but his revolutionary observations triggered a life of research dedicated to understanding. ![]() He died on May 28th, of a heart attack, in Aberdeen, Scotland, while on a speaking tour. ![]() He is considered the first community psychologist, because his work pioneered attention to community life, prevention, and population health. He decided to immigrate to the United States, and settled at the Long Island College of Medicine. Adler University is named for Alfred Adler (1870-1937), a physician, psychotherapist, and founder of Adlerian psychology, sometimes called individual psychology. He opened many child guidance clinics in Austria, but by 1932 most had been closed due to his Jewish ancestry. This theory also focuses on the importance of social interactions and community involvement in order to promote individual growth. Effectiveness Adlerian theory is a holistic approach to psychology that emphasizes the importance of overcoming feelings of inferiority and gaining a sense of belonging in order to achieve success and happiness. Aside from a stretch when he served as a doctor in WWI, he practiced psychology, and founded the school of “individual psychology”. Despite this, he excelled in math, and studied medicine when he attended the University of Vienna. His childhood was marked by difficulty, namely: neglect as a middle child, suffering from rickets, witnessing his brother’s death due to illness, and being run over twice in the streets.
